Albanians should wait for the price of fuel to reach 220 lek per liter for the government to intervene to curb further increases.
In his speech at the Socialist Party Assembly, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the government will intervene in the excise tax on oil only if the price exceeds this level.
"We have decided that for every day when the price jumps above the ceiling of 220 lek, there will be an immediate 20% reduction in the oil excise tax," said Rama.
This means that one of the delayed measures that the government presents as an intervention will only come into effect after the price reaches a very high level for citizens. Until then, Albanians will continue to pay for fuel at the new prices, which have already increased by 10–15 lek per liter.
Energy market experts say that the excise tax reduction does not have a real impact on the final price for the consumer, while also warning of the risk of a lack of supply in the market.
Another measure mentioned by the prime minister is the return of the Fuel Board, which he presents as a mechanism for stabilizing prices. But previous experience with the functioning of this board has shown that Albanians have continued to pay high fuel prices, without a real reduction in the market.
