Love on the balance sheet, how much does Valentine's Day cost in Albania?

Valentine's Day didn't invent love, but it made it measurable. For several days in a row, Tirana's market turns red, restaurants turn into studios with candles and live music, agencies publish weekend packages, while social networks become a showcase where the surprise must be seen as much as felt.

In an economy where consumers are learning to compare, bargain-hunt, and buy more "experiences," February 14th is a mini-season that boosts the turnover of a series of sectors at once, from flowers and cakes to jewelry, hospitality, and entertainment services.

This day also comes at a time when prices, even when not on alert, remain present in decision-making. Annual inflation in December 2025 was 2.3 percent, while the average annual price increase in 2025 was 2.2 percent.

"Romantic dinner" and "beautiful bouquet" are not just emotional choices, but part of a budget that is built more carefully than a few years ago. And this is where the Valentine's Day economy begins: not with the question "How much do you want?", but with the question "How much does it look?".

Many Albanian and international brands have invested in expensive advertising during the Valentine's period, using well-known influencers and personalized campaigns to attract consumers. This has turned a once simple holiday into a massive event, turning the Albanian market into a huge opportunity for businesses.

Flowers are the fastest signal of this economy. They are an immediate, photogenic, comparable product with a strong dependence on imports, i.e. exchange rates, transport costs and seasonality. According to INSTAT data, flower imports increase year after year and peak in February and March, as well as in the summer, when weddings increase.

This is why, on the eve of the holiday, flower shops sell not only roses, but also "packages": accessories, cards, balloons, gift boxes, i.e. an added value around the basic product, because the competition is no longer on the flower, but on the composition and service.

According to INSTAT data for the chapter "Ornamental trees and plants, roots, flowers and leaves", the net weight of imports has increased from about 5.20 million kilograms in 2020 to about 9.53 million kilograms in 2025.

This is an increase of approximately 83 percent in six years. The value has also expanded significantly, from about 884.3 million in 2020 to about 1.39 billion in 2025, an increase of approximately 58 percent. In 2025, the Netherlands and Italy are the two main centers of this import, but with different roles. The Netherlands leads in value, while Italy in volume.

Florists in the capital claim that the demand for flower bouquets on Valentine's Day is always stable, with prices starting from 2,000-10,000 lek.

From bouquets to tables, the "expense of love" is quickly shifting to restaurants and hotels. What is actually purchased is time out of the routine, an environment that feels special, a menu conceived as a ceremony, a small performance that distinguishes the evening from an ordinary dinner.

In recent years, this model has also been reinforced by the way we pay. The Bank of Albania has reported strong growth in electronic payments and POS card payments, signaling that more and more transactions are moving to formal channels, where offers, packages and organized promotions work more easily.

According to communications with several restaurants in the capital, prices for a special dinner can range from 60 to 100 euros per couple, depending on the typology of the restaurant and the offering of a special menu. For restaurants with a well-known reputation, the price can reach up to 200 euros per couple. In cities such as Tirana, Durrës and Vlorë, where tourism and activities are more present, the offer of restaurants and hotels offering special packages is higher.

At the other end of the spectrum are “sustainable” gifts, jewelry, watches, perfume, where spending also has a status message. Here too, the market has learned to play with consumer psychology: price cuts, collections with heart motifs, customizations, premium boxes, i.e. mechanisms that make the purchase seem like an emotional investment, not a simple luxury. In a contact with jeweler Roche Bianka, the requests this year have been focused on personalized products, the costs for such products ranged from 120-500 euros.

Meanwhile, for some couples, the biggest purchase is not an item, but a short trip, a weekend away, a little getaway that turns into memories and content for social networks, and therefore into symbolic "capital".

The Ilirida agency reports that the coincidence of February 14 with the weekend has significantly increased interest in two- or three-day packages, both domestically and internationally. According to them, reservations have started earlier than usual, with requests focused mainly on urban destinations in the region and European cities with direct flights, where the ticket price and short stay time make the trip affordable even for average budgets.

Within the country, the most sought-after destinations have been Vlora, Gjirokastra and Korça, as well as areas with resorts and hotels with spa services, where prices for a weekend for a couple usually range from 150 to 300 euros, depending on the standard and services included.

For trips abroad, interest has been mainly in Rome, Milan, Venice and Istanbul, with total costs for two people in most cases ranging from 400 to 700 euros, including flights and accommodation for two nights.

Personal care is thought to occupy a very important place in women's spending and every holiday, like February 14, proves this. Requests to give such a gift to their partner this year have been numerous. The representative of "My spa" in the capital claims that this year too, when they created the Valentine's Day packages, they thought of offering a wide range of services: Spa, massages, different aesthetic treatments, in order to have a wide interest.

For several years, other beauty and spa centers have been offering packages for couples, or even personalized for men. Demand for such packages has been increasing for years, dispelling the myth of ordinary gifts for men.

Packages start at 4,000 lek per person or 6,000 lek per couple./Monitor.al/
