Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has spoken from the detention center in The Hague about political life in the event of an acquittal by the Special Court. In an interview with the German media outlet "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", although reserved, he expressed his position on political developments in Kosovo.
The former president of Kosovo, who has been tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity and is awaiting a court verdict, said he has left the political race behind, but not political life.
"You ask if my political life is over. I see the political race behind me, but not my political life. As a free citizen of Kosovo, I will continue to serve the public and the state in the future. I bow to the people of Kosovo who have shown me trust, respect and support for my political vision for two decades. I also express my deep gratitude to our international partners who have worked closely with me to realize the will of the people for freedom and independence. I feel fulfilled in my political career," Thaçi said.
The former leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo was also asked if he would advise the current leader of this party to reach a coalition with the Vetevendosje Movement in the name of unblocking the political situation in Kosovo, to which Thaçi said that the interest of the citizens of Kosovo should come first.
"My priority is the legal procedures that I am currently going through. However, what I can say is that in Kosovo, everyone must always put the interests of Kosovar citizens above the interests of the party," the former president briefly stated to FAZ.
However, Hashim Thaçi from The Hague has seen Kosovo's foreign policy and relations with international partners as lost.
"The last five years seem to have been lost for Kosovo in its relations with the EU, the US and the West as a whole. This is important for a state and society in transition. Sanctions against Kosovo's institutions are a cause for concern. Maintaining good and honest relations with our strategic allies is in the national interest of Kosovo", he said.
Hashim Thaci in this interview also spoke about the judicial process against him and other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
While explaining how the establishment of the Specialized Chambers came about, he said that the accusations of organ trafficking were fabricated by Russian agents and that this was the "promise" of the West in the request for the formation of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
However, he added that he expects the truth to triumph.
“Shpresa jonë tani është që ky proces të kontribuojë në të vërtetën, drejtësinë dhe dinjitetin. Jam i bindur se gjyqtarët e kanë dëgjuar dhe parë të vërtetën. E vetmja pyetje që mbetet është se çfarë do të bëjnë me të”, u përgjigj Thaçi për FAZ.
Ish-përfaqësuesi politik i UÇK-së u shpreh se e vërteta e luftës në Kosovë është e qartë dhe se gjyqi ndaj tij nuk duhet të mbështetet në “provat” e regjimit të Sllobodan Millosheviqit.
“Kosova kurrë, në asnjë kohë dhe në asnjë rrethanë, nuk sulmoi as edhe një centimetër të territorit serb. Duhet të kujtojmë se populli i Kosovës po luftonte kundër shtypjes; Ata po luftonin fjalë për fjalë për të drejtën e tyre njerëzore për të ekzistuar në këtë tokë. Bëhej fjalë për mbijetesën e tyre si individë dhe si popull. Ky proces nuk duhet të përdoret si mjet për të rishkruar historinë dhe për të zvogëluar vuajtjet e vërteta të një populli”, deklaroi Thaçi.
Ish-presidenti i Kosovës është pyetur edhe për ish-prokurorin special Jack Smith dhe nëse mendon që i njëjti është i ndikuar politikisht siç deklaron presidenti amerikan, Donald Trump.
“Në këtë pikë, mund të flas vetëm për një parim, të cilin e konsideroj universal: Ligji nuk duhet të përdoret kurrë si instrument politik. Kosova gjithmonë e ka konsideruar Perëndimin si një model për demokracinë dhe sundimin e ligjit. Këto janë standardet që ne po përpiqemi t’i zbatojmë edhe në shoqërinë tonë”, përfundoi intervistën Hashim Thaçi.
