The Albanian government has reacted through Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali, regarding the US airstrikes in Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro.
In a reaction on the social network X, Spiropali states that Albania stands by the United States and its actions, emphasizing support for the American government's confrontation with authoritarianism, corruption, and criminal networks.
"We support Secretary of State Rubio's strong leadership in confronting authoritarianism, corruption, and transnational criminal networks," Spiropali writes.
But the minister's statement seems like yet another act of hypocrisy. Appearing as an ardent supporter of the fight against authoritarianism, corruption, and organized crime presupposes, at the very least, being part of a government and a country that truly fights these phenomena and does not identify with them.
In fact, Spiropali is part of a government that SPAK investigations are increasingly revealing to be involved in corruption affairs. A government with a prime minister who, in some cases, exercises power even over institutions that are legally local self-government. In parallel, international investigations and reports have identified Albania as one of the hubs of international drug trafficking, while repeated cases have also involved state officials or majority MPs linked to organized crime.
Under these conditions, perhaps it was enough for Minister Spiropali to spare details in her message in her fervent enthusiasm to support the US actions.
