Former Democratic MP Ervin Salianji has announced that tomorrow he will file his application to run for chairman of the Democratic Party, despite the fact that the deadline for candidate registration is less than 24 hours away.
In a Facebook reaction, Salianji used a reference from Naim Frashëri to emphasize the Western orientation of democracy and the Democratic Party itself.
"'The sun rises from where it sets,' Naim Frashëri teaches us. Light, progress, civilization and democracy come from the West. That is why Albanians have decided to get knowledge and culture from the advanced world," he writes.
Salianji emphasizes that the Western democratic model inspires him and that he will not stop in his efforts to democratize the Democratic Party and leave the past behind.
He describes the situation in the party as a "strong irony", saying that on the day when, according to him, the usurpation and violation of democratic rules in the DP is being declared, he is in the place where the Magna Carta, a symbol of the history of democracy, was born.
"Despite the farce, tomorrow I will submit my application to run for president of the Democratic Party of Albania," writes Salianji.
Earlier today, the Democratic Party announced that the deadline for registering candidacies for the position of mayor is April 30, 12:00, leaving candidates with less than 24 hours to register.
Currently, the only candidate in the race is Sali Berisha. The latter has considered Salinj as having self-excluded himself from the DP, after the former MP began a tour of meetings with grassroots Democrats demanding a complete reorganization of the party.
