Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is expected to take over the leadership of the House of Representatives, has stated that the priorities of the new majority will be affordability and holding the presidential administration accountable.
However, debates have begun within the Democratic Party about how the electoral victory should be used.
Progressive lawmakers are seeking deeper reforms in healthcare, taxation of billionaires and social policies, while moderate Democrats support a more pragmatic approach and possible agreement with Republicans.
In addition to economic issues, the new parliamentary majority is expected to exert stronger control over the Trump administration.
Democrats will be able to lead parliamentary committees, request official documents, hold hearings, and investigate decisions of federal institutions.
Among the issues that could be examined are immigration policies, the financial activities of the Trump family, relationships with private companies and the way documents related to Jeffrey Epstein are managed.
The Democratic-controlled Senate can also block the president's proposed appointments to the federal administration and the judiciary.
However, experts warn that excessive focus on political investigations could distract from voters' main concern: the economy.
President Trump, despite losing the Republican majority, retains the ability to implement parts of his program through executive orders and other presidential powers.
This sets the stage for a long period of institutional clashes, where Democrats can pass laws that the president opposes, while the White House can continue its policies without the support of Congress on issues where it has executive authority.
The new Democratic majority will take office in January 2027, having two years to show concrete results before the 2028 presidential election.
For Democrats, victory in Congress is just the first step. The biggest challenge will be meeting citizens' expectations for a reduction in the cost of living, in a situation where President Donald Trump continues to have significant powers to influence the country's economic policies.
