According to the latest annual report by the Washington-based international organization Freedom House, Kosovo and Albania are classified as “partly free.” The 2026 Freedom in the World report shows that Kosovo has marked a slight improvement, scoring 61 out of 100, one point more than last year.
The document, published on March 19, said that courts in Kosovo have demonstrated independence in their decisions, despite facing significant political pressure. The report also notes that the political and institutional crisis that hit the country over the past year, during which Kosovo was governed mainly by an acting government, has affected the progress of judicial institutions.
In the same report, Albania is rated higher than other countries in the region, reaching 69 points. It is followed by Montenegro with 68 points and North Macedonia with 67 points. Meanwhile, Serbia has a lower ranking with 53 points, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is rated with 54 points.
