The State Police intervened in the late hours of Sunday evening to disperse activists of the "Albania is Becoming" movement, who had been holding an uninterrupted protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office building for about a month.
During the intervention, police forces removed with special vehicles some of the equipment and tools used by the protesters during their stay in the square. The action took place after midnight and caused strong reactions from the protest organizers.
The leader of the movement, Adriatik Lapaj, reacted immediately through a public statement, directly accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of violence and violation of the constitutional right to protest.
"Friends, last night after midnight, dozens of Edi Rama's forces attacked us in a rage. Faced with the violation of my Constitutional right to express my opinion through protest, I did not move. I started filming. As a result of their actions, one of the heaters hit me," Lapaj writes.
He announces that he is at the Trauma Hospital for medical examinations, but emphasizes that he will return to the square to continue the protest.
"I will return to the square again. Edi Rama, I am not afraid of you. On the contrary! You are the leader of a gang and you will be held accountable," Lapaj declares, calling on citizens to unite against what he describes as "thieving."
