The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, recalled December 8, 1990, a date that, on its 35th anniversary, finds him once again at the head of the party that, theoretically, failed to eradicate the 'remnants' of the communist regime.
As in every Youth Day anniversary, this time too, the main place in Berisha's speech is occupied by Azem Hajdari, with whom he had quite a few clashes at the beginning of pluralism. Berisha emphasized that the protests and the "democratic revolution" divided the eras and established political pluralism.
He stated that the students of December 1990 "were indomitable missionaries, who from the first protest proclaimed as the motto of their revolution, freedom, democracy, Albania as Europe."
"Like 35 years ago today, on December 8, 1990, students of UT and other higher education institutions, led by Azem Hajdari, launched protests, the democratic revolution that like a hurricane truly divided the eras and established political pluralism. Today, the entire Albanian nation honors December 8 as the most important date in the history of its freedom after the declaration of independence. December 8, 1990 is the birthday of freedoms. On this date, the angels of democracy, led by their legendary leader Azem Hajdari, rose in Tirana in the student movement to overthrow the communist dictatorship. The students were indomitable missionaries, who from the first protest proclaimed as the motto of their revolution, freedom, democracy, Albania as Europe", said Berisha.
Unfortunately, even after 35 years, Albania still lacks a consolidated democracy and politics still remains in the hands of the old figures of the endless transition. Even more ironically, the party that was founded to bring pluralism and democracy, today is not democratic in form or spirit. In fact, it is still led by the same person, transforming from a political force of ideals, into a party that protects the interests of a family and not the democratic values it once claimed to represent.
