The Socialist Party is moving forward, with a clear focus on the removal of Erion Veliaj from any leadership position. Away from the media's attention and with a meeting that is not known where it was held, it is learned that the Assembly of the National Association of Municipalities has decided to dismiss Veliaj from the leadership of this institution and appoint the mayor of Durrës, Emirjana Sako, as his successor.
This decision comes just a few days before the Tirana City Council meeting on September 23, where the formalization of Veliaj's dismissal from the position of mayor of the capital is expected.
Veliaj, who has been imprisoned in Durrës since February, is now physically and politically absent from the Tirana Municipality office, seemingly forgotten by the very party that promoted him, undergoing planned isolation and departure.
Significantly, the movement comes from within the leftist ranks themselves: the majority of the Association's members are SP mayors, an indication that the blow to Veliaj has already been decided and not simply a technical decision.
Meanwhile, the strengthening of Emirjana Sako at the head of the National Association of Municipalities is seen by analysts as a clear signal that the Socialist Party is reorganizing local government, strengthening its political weight in Tirana and Durrës. This internal reconfiguration, at a time when the decision on early local elections in Tirana is expected, indicates not only a change of course, but also a silent political purge within the party itself.
Apparently, Marta will simply be a "pass" for the Municipal Council, to remove Erion Veliaj from the big political game.
