The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has commented on the election of the People's Advocate to media outside the Parliament. To justify the signatures that the Democratic MPs gave to Endri Shabani, Berisha said that he received the votes during the period when he supported the independent candidate Florjan Binaj for mayor of Tirana.
"I'm not saying that Endri Shabani didn't get the signatures. Endri Shabani got them during a period when he supported Florian Bina, because I can't say that it wasn't a complete moral coalition of all political forces. But then a series of problems emerged that proved that the one who had that vocabulary as an opposition member of the opposition, wasn't just that, but was a person with complete ties to Edi Rama. Our MPs have withdrawn the signatures, in writing. It's the most common practice to withdraw the proposal. They might not have signed it, you're right, but don't try to cover it up. Those signatures were given because of that coalition that was created, then it turned out that when Endri Shabani was analyzed, everything turned out to be connected to Edi Rama," Berisha said.
The DP leader also questioned whether the opposition would continue cooperation in joint committees with the majority on electoral and territorial reform, but without giving a definitive answer.
"It is not a question of two reforms here, it is a question of a final, firm stance. Because we committed to the Ombudsman in the interest of the citizens. It was in the interest of the Albanians to have a courageous man, to protect their rights at least a little. Now what is left to discuss with them, that you will deceive them again, no", said Berisha.
