After the departure of Ilir Proda, 14 senior police officials and 2 female lawyers are aiming for the position of General Director of the State Police.
So who are the most favored names to take over the leadership of this important institution?
Tonin Vocaj, a long-serving police officer who has led the Tirana Police and served as the head of organized crime in the State Police, is seen as one of the main favorites. He is considered a figure who is not opposed even by the opposition.
Lorenc Panganika is thought to be a very well-known name, as he enjoys a reputation within the ranks of the State Police. He has held leadership positions, such as director in Tirana and Fier, and with the arrival of Proda he was "interned" in the Police Academy.
Skënder Hita, the current director of the Fier district, is another strong candidate in the race. He has a career of over 15 years in the police, having headed several directorates such as Dibra, Durres and Fier.
Neritan Nallbati, currently director of the Criminal Police Department, is also seen as a strong candidate in this race.
While among the other candidates there are also names that are being supported by certain clans, such as Afrim Tafa or Gentian Berberi.
The candidates will be evaluated by a commission headed by Deputy Minister of Interior Silva Caka, with members Eduart Merkaj, director of the AMP, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Kledia Ngjela.
The list of the top three names will be sent to the Prime Minister, who will then decide who will be the new Director General of the State Police.
