European leaders have issued a strong warning against any attempt to forcibly change Ukraine's borders, just two days before a key US-Russia summit on the Ukrainian issue to be held in Alaska. In a joint statement, European Union leaders stressed that the people of Ukraine must have the full right to determine their own future, without external interference and without coercion. The statement also stresses the need to respect the principles of territorial integrity, underlining that international borders should not be changed unilaterally or by force.
The declaration was signed by 26 of the 27 leaders of the European Union. The only person missing from the list was Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is known for his softer stance on Russia and for his ongoing efforts to thwart EU policies aimed at supporting Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has insisted that any peace agreement regarding the conflict must include a territorial swap. He has expressed his readiness for Russia to retain control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and Crimea, while in return Ukraine could take control of part of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, which are currently partially occupied by Russian forces. This statement by European leaders represents a clear stance against any territorial changes imposed by force and emphasizes the importance of the self-determination of the Ukrainian people as the basis for a lasting solution to the conflict in the region.
The upcoming US-Russia summit is expected to be a key moment for discussing the fate of Ukraine and the possibilities of achieving peace, while international tensions remain high.
