The United States is trying to organize a roundtable discussion between former President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with the aim of ending the conflict in Ukraine. US Vice President JD Vance said that the US government is discussing determining the moment when the three leaders could sit down together to talk. He stressed that it would not be appropriate for the presidents of the two warring countries to meet before the meeting between Trump and Putin, which is scheduled to be held on Friday in Alaska.
According to Vance, the main obstacle – Vladimir Putin's previous refusal to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky – has been overcome. On the other hand, the US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, hinted that the Ukrainian president could attend the summit. "Yes, I think it's definitely possible," he told CNN, emphasizing that there can be no agreement without the signature of all parties and that the main goal is to end the war.
The decision on Zelensky's presence at the table is expected to be made by Donald Trump, while European Union leaders and other leaders on the continent have insisted that Kiev be part of the US-Russia negotiations.
The Ukrainian president has also called on European allies - including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, which have been left out of these talks - to maintain a unified stance in relation to the negotiation process.
