A Royal Navy warship is to deploy to the Middle East to join an international mission aimed at ensuring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, the British Ministry of Defense has confirmed.
According to the official statement, the destroyer HMS Dragon will be pre-deployed to the region ahead of the launch of any future multinational mission, which aims to protect international ships during the passage through Hormuz, as soon as security conditions permit.
The Ministry of Defence stressed that the deployment of HMS Dragon is part of careful planning to ensure the UK's readiness as part of a multinational coalition, led jointly with France.
The coalition aims to ensure freedom of navigation and the protection of international shipping in one of the world's most important maritime corridors, at a time of high tensions in the Persian Gulf region.
