French Prime Minister François Bayrou has lost the vote of confidence he himself sought in his government, leading to the downfall of the executive he led.
The National Assembly voted 364 to 194 to dismiss the government, officially removing Bayrou from the post of prime minister and opening a new political crisis in France, the BBC reports.
This is a serious blow to President Emmanuel Macron's allies, who already face major challenges in forming a new parliamentary majority or avoiding early elections.
Bayrou had previously stated that “the biggest risk is not taking any risk,” while describing this vote as a critical moment for the political and institutional future of the country. However, the result of the vote showed a lack of sufficient support for his reform agenda and his model of governance.
Francois Bayrou, who took office just nine months ago, must submit his resignation after losing the vote on Monday afternoon.
