Since the entry into force of the Special Court regulation, trials in this important institution of justice have been suspended due to the lawyers' boycott. All trials, including those against important political figures, have been postponed due to the lack of lawyers, who in recent days have warned that they will not even participate in the sessions for the determination of security measures, which could result in the release of suspects for serious crimes.
This Tuesday, the trial against Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj was postponed again to October 13, due to the absence of lawyers. The legal defenders were fined 50 thousand lek each by the trial panel. The investigation deadlines for the defendant Erion Veliaj were suspended, as he is the only one being held in pre-trial detention.
Earlier, the GJKKO also postponed the trial of former president Ilir Meta, who has raised suspicions about the scenario. According to Meta, the conflict between the GJKKO and the lawyers is elaborate and serves political games. The GJKKO regulation has been strongly opposed by journalists and the AGSH has attacked it in the Constitutional Court. But, despite these movements, no trial has been held in the Special Court for a month.
