A massive fire has engulfed a forest area near the Mechanical Plant in Poliçan, causing alarm among residents and difficulties in intervention for firefighting forces. The fire, which continues to be active this Thursday, has started since morning and is spreading to an area covered with bushes, in difficult terrain.
According to the Berat Police, Specialists of the Crime Investigation Section at the Poliçan Police Station have referred the materials to the Prosecutor's Office, where proceedings have been initiated against citizen MS, 63 years old, a resident of Poliçan and with mental health problems. He is suspected of having started a fire in the territory of the Mechanical Plant, which then spread to the forest.
"It's a disaster, a grave mistake for the future of our children," said a resident of the area, concerned about the consequences the fire could bring to the environment and public health.
Rapid intervention was hampered by rugged terrain and a lack of adequate equipment. The plant's hydrants were not working, forcing firefighters to rely on water from the city. Despite the efforts of firefighters and the army, the bushfire remains active, while the area near the plant has been brought under control.
