After the publication of two articles by the Daily Mail newspaper, one in 2022 and another four days ago, which describe the sad reality of Has and the migration routes of Albanians to Britain, the Albanian Embassy in London has chosen to react - not about the social situation, nor about the lack of visas, nor about trafficking, but... about the newspaper's writing style.
In a response where irony is more pronounced than analysis, the embassy criticizes the Daily Mail for “lazy pseudo-journalism,” for recycling the same reportage and for using banal emotions. Journalist Sue Reid is accused of obsessing over Hasi and for using clichés about Albanians as immigrants and linked to crime. The only thing missing from the embassy’s response is… a word about Hasi himself.
Instead of addressing British institutions about the need for safe migration routes, or proposing policies that make Hasi more than a "ghost town", the Albanian embassy prefers to give journalism lectures from afar - like a literary critic who bears no responsibility for the policies of the Albanian state.
Meanwhile, the Albanians of Has continue to leave, the Daily Mail continues to photograph them, and the Albanian government – zealously represented in London – does its best not to talk about the reasons why they are fleeing.
