"I'm going to jump off the building," says one of the affected residents, after the notice she received today from the bailiff's office to leave her apartment.
32 families are being evicted from social housing built in 1991 for homeless families in the beach area near the “red wheel.” In 2012, citizen Mikel Noçka purchased these apartments from the Municipality of Durrës and the Ministry of Finance, while the residents were still living there.
Although some of them continue to have the status of homeless, after two meetings with the mayor, no concrete solution has been offered. Some residents state that the mayor has advised them to reapply for social housing, joining the queue of 3,000 families who have been waiting for years.
Meanwhile, the appeals court has not yet issued a final decision, as the case was postponed following the murder of judge Astrit Kalaja, who was expected to take it up for further trial. However, residents were asked today to vacate their homes against their will.
