Renowned actor Florian Binaj is the candidate that the Democratic Party has decided to support for the position of mayor of Tirana in the by-elections to be held on November 9, 2025.
In a media appearance this afternoon, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, declared that Binaj is “a prominent personality of art and a relentless fighter for the causes of Albanian citizens.” Berisha invited all allies, oppositionists and citizens to support this candidacy, which he described as “a figure that brings honor to every citizen and the capital of the country.”
Florian Binaj's name will now be presented to allies from the group mandated by the Democratic Party, for approval and further support in the electoral process.
Who is Florian Binaj?
Florian Binaj was born on October 11, 1985 and is one of the most prominent actors of the new generation in Albania. He became known to the Albanian public through his roles as a comedian in the comedy show "Portokalli" on Top Channel, where he played characters beloved by the public for many years.
In recent years, Binaj has also been the moderator of the investigative show "Piranjat", broadcast on Syri TV, where he has been distinguished for his critical approach to the phenomena of corruption, abuses of power, and the problems of ordinary citizens.
In addition to his media activity, Binaj has been continuously engaged in civil society initiatives, particularly in the areas of environmental protection, transparency and civil rights. He has participated in public protests and campaigns, often being a strong voice in defense of the public interest and an outspoken critic of misgovernance.
Unlike many other well-known figures who have entered politics, Binaj has not previously been a member of any political party. For this reason, the Democratic Party's support for his candidacy is seen as an innovation in Albanian politics — an attempt to bring independent personalities, with social influence and who enjoy the trust of citizens, into politics.
In the November 9 elections, Florian Binaj will face the Socialist Party candidate, Ogerta Manastirliu, while the process comes after the dismissal of former mayor Erion Veliaj from office.
Binaj, in addition to his artistic career and public engagement, is 40 years old and a father of three. He is known for his independent and critical stances, as well as his ability to communicate with the public, which has made him a well-known and respected figure in Albanian public life.
