In an attempt to come out in support of Gazment Bardhi after exchanging jokes with Zegjine Caushi, former Speaker of the Parliament, Jozefina Topalli, did not hide her nostalgia for the time when - according to her - she was facing Fatos Nano, Dritëro Agolli or Arta Dade.
In an inappropriate comparison, Ms. Topalli managed to single out the "values" in the SP, forgetting that the same names, when they were in parliament, did not spare either contempt or harshness towards the Democratic Party. They are the same ones who never recognized the crimes of communism and represented a party that has its origins in the formation of Enver Hoxha. The same party that in the '90s and until 2005 was accused of serious abuses, including the manipulation of the 2001 elections and the 2003 local elections.
But in the fever to defeat "Zegjinena", it seems that the DP has fallen into the trap that it has set itself over the years. Even in the blue seat, there are no longer the deputies who made a dignified and combative opposition. If the PS has chosen Zegjinena as a figure for the PR, in the DP there are deputies of the same level, who speak and do politics with the same language. Moreover, elected with the same clientelistic criteria that the Fier deputy is criticized for.
In order not to appear equal in this decline in standards, Jozefina Topalli chooses nostalgia for a time when the Socialist Party was, in essence, the same as it is today – perhaps less banal in form, but with the same logic of power. The problem is that there is no longer an opposition that rises above the level of the opponent. There is a party that has also become banal, due to the lack of dignified figures and its highest political representation with Flamur Noka.
In the end, it's not a matter of nostalgia. It's a matter of standards. And the standards have fallen on both sides of the room.
