The Constitutional Court today struck down the decision-making of the highest levels of justice in Albania, declaring the home confinement of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha for the period July-December 2024 as unconstitutional. In addition to the legal victory, this decision also carries a financial cost for the state budget.

The state "in debt" to Berisha
In the final point of its decision, the Constitutional Court has imposed a symbolic but significant financial sanction. The Ministry of Finance has been ordered to pay the amount of 75,000 lek for the costs of the applicant’s legal representation.
Although the figure is not high in relation to the importance of the case, this obligation directly charges the Albanian government due to the decisions taken by the Special Courts (GJKKO) and the Supreme Court, which were found to be in violation of constitutional principles.
