The Supreme Court seals the conviction of Fredi Beleri for vote buying. The Criminal Panel, after reviewing the case, decided to “Enforce Decision No. 26 (87-2024-176), dated 25.06.2024, of the Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime”.
Beleri was sentenced to 2 years in prison on charges of electoral corruption while running for mayor of Himara. He was arrested on May 12, 2023, two days before the local elections and although the winner against Jorgo Goro, repeated requests to Albanian justice institutions to allow Fredi Beleri to take office as mayor were rejected.
Beleri was elected a member of the European Parliament and took office after his release from prison.
The arrest of Fredi Beleri caused tension in diplomatic relations between Tirana and official Athens.
