The Complaints and Sanctions Commission (KAS) has rejected Gjergj Nika's request to register as an independent candidate for the Municipality of Vlora. In the meeting held this afternoon, KAS members reasoned that, even though Nika holds the mandate of municipal councilor, he should have registered an Initiative Committee, as required by law for candidates proposed by voters.
According to the decision, Albanian law does not provide for self-declaration as an independent candidate, so the procedure for creating an Initiative Committee is mandatory. However, due to his mandate as a councilor, Nika would not be required to collect the signatures of 1% of the municipality's voters. Today's decision by KAS confirms the previous rejection made by the State Election Commissioner, Ilirjan Celibashi.
