VNA has obtained the draft of the Criminal Amnesty Law, which is being reviewed by the Albanian Parliament and aims to mitigate the sentences of certain categories of convicts, in order to facilitate their integration into society. The amnesty is foreseen for criminal offenses committed until December 31, 2025.
According to the draft, persons sentenced by final judgment to up to three years in prison for men and up to four years for women, including alternative forms of punishment, will benefit. For those still serving their sentence, exemption from prison is foreseen if they have up to three years left for men and four years for women.
The benefit scheme also includes the elderly, aged 60 for men and 50 for women, as well as persons who were minors at the time of the commission of the criminal offense.
The draft law excludes from the amnesty persons who have evaded justice, those convicted of serious crimes, those with life imprisonment, and subjects under investigation or trial by SPAK. It also provides for a reduction of sentences to one year for men and up to one and a half years for women and minors.
The law is expected to enter into force 15 days after publication in the Official Gazette.
