Spiro and Dhespo Kalovioti, two elderly people, 78 and 79 years old, from the village of "Lefter Talo" in the municipality of Finiqi, fell victim to a violent robbery today at midnight.
The elderly couple live alone, while the head of the family is also the village headman. As such, he managed the lands of his fellow villagers, renting them out. This is thought to be the reason for the robbery, as the thieves were aware that the elderly couple had money in the apartment that they were going to distribute to the landowners. The couple was brutally raped while they resisted the thieves in order not to give them the amount of 2 million old lek. The elderly woman has multiple wounds, several bruises and several stitches on her head.
"11:30 a.m., they didn't understand at all when they came, how they got in at the gate, the tall one, while the other one was being held from behind, and he got in and this (man) got up, what do you want, he said, get up and give me the money, he said, I don't have any money, he said, no, he said, we know you have money. We told him that we gave him the money for the land, and they beat us with sticks," the old woman says.
"I am also the village head and now I also manage the lands that my fellow villagers give me, I give them money and they give me the lands. I gave all the money to the villagers, but there were 5-6 people who did not come from Greece, that money was what they found," the 79-year-old confessed.
"We saw that boy as a body, he was a small body, he had his clothes back, he was wearing a mask, both on his head and here, I didn't see his face. He didn't show his face at all, he held it back, beat us once, and then he said, go ahead and check it. With a stick, a stick this thick and this... with a stick, not a stick, just like that. What did you do to me? I told him, you shot my husband, don't shoot my husband, I told him, shoot me. You shot me here... to call the police I didn't have a phone because they took it from me... my brother-in-law called the girl, the girl called the police. He had a pistol in his hand, now what a pistol it was...", the old woman said.
The robbery at the elderly home had begun on Friday, when they were sleeping at home and heard the drawers of the closet being searched.
The police have not yet managed to identify the perpetrators of the incident, while Spiro and Dhespo Kalovioti are receiving medical treatment at Saranda Hospital.
Violent robberies against the elderly have been repeated cases in recent years in the villages of Finiqi.
