A shocking crime has been uncovered in the Netherlands, where the victim was 18-year-old Syrian Ryan Al-Jayar, who was allegedly killed by her two brothers on the orders of her father. According to authorities, the motive for the crime is related to "family honor", as the young woman is suspected of having a partner, which her father considered shameful.
Ryan left her family home in Jura on May 22, 2024. Six days later, her body was found in a swamp in Lelystad, bound with duct tape — with her hands and feet tied and her mouth covered. Forensic experts found traces of her father's DNA under her fingernails, indicating that the girl had resisted.
The two brothers, Mohammed (23) and Muhannad (25), appeared in court on Thursday after being arrested by Dutch police. They claim the crime was committed by their father, who fled to Syria.
Meanwhile, the father has sent two emails to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, claiming responsibility and declaring his sons innocent. But the prosecution has rejected his statements, stressing that there is evidence that he himself ordered the kidnapping and murder of the girl.
The father is expected to be tried in absentia, while the trial against the two brothers has begun, on charges of participating in a premeditated honor crime.
The incident has caused widespread outrage in the Netherlands, reigniting the debate about honor crimes and the protection of victims of domestic violence.
