The little boy's Albanian father has spoken to Greek media and revealed how the tragic event happened. "My little daughter called me and I ran immediately, that's all I remember. My son ran away," the little boy's shocked father told Alpha television.
According to information broadcast by ERT, the couple, who also have two other children, had left to buy supplies for the house and when they returned shortly after noon, the little boy lost his parents' attention and approached the tree where the pit bull was tied, which attacked him, causing serious injuries.
"The dog was homeless, they had thrown it away and I took it in because the village said it would eat animals. I took it in to give it a place to stay, and it took my son away from me. The boy saw me, smiled at me and closed his eyes," added the little boy's father.
The child's parents transported him to Zakynthos General Hospital, where doctors did everything they could to bring him back to life, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful.
The child's father is of Albanian origin, while his mother is British, and both have lived on the island of Zakynthos for years.
