An Iranian military source has warned that Tehran will strike strategic infrastructure in the region, including energy facilities, if the United States attacks bridges and power plants on Iranian territory.
The warning comes after US President Donald Trump said Washington would hit Iranian infrastructure if Iran attacked commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement to the semi-official Iranian Tasnim news agency, the military source stated that Iran has a "steely determination" to exercise its control over this strategic waterway and that it will not allow it to be used as a source of threats to the country.
According to him, navigation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain safe for ships that coordinate with Iranian authorities and respect the rules set by Tehran.
"A US attack on any Iranian bridge or power plant would be followed by a counter-attack on regional infrastructure, including energy facilities where the US has interests," the source warned.
He added that Washington must have realized in recent days Iran's ability to strike targets it chooses, describing any new escalation on Trump's part as an "adventure" that would end in failure.
Tensions between the two countries have risen sharply, as US and Iranian forces have continued to exchange attacks, despite a framework agreement brokered by Pakistan and signed in June, which aimed to end the conflict that began in February and pave the way for a long-term peace agreement.
