President Donald Trump has announced he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before his Iran deadline and following his threats to destroy an "entire civilization."
Trump said the ceasefire agreement was reached on the condition that Iran agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, where they requested that I stop the destructive force that was to be sent to Iran tonight, and on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the FULL, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I am agreeing to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for a two-week period. This will be a two-way CEAS!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"The reason for doing this is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives and are very far from a final Agreement regarding Long-Term PEACE with Iran and PEACE in the Middle East," the president added.
"We received a 10-point proposal from Iran and we believe it is a workable basis upon which we can negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past disagreement have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and implemented. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor that this long-standing problem is close to being resolved," he concluded.
