US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska to discuss the future of the war in Ukraine. The meeting was announced by Trump on social media and confirmed by the Kremlin, which called the location “logical” due to its geographical proximity to Russia.
The announcement came just hours after Trump suggested that Ukraine could be forced to give up territory to end the war, which began in February 2022 with a full-scale Russian invasion. According to CBS News sources, the White House is trying to convince European leaders of a deal that would leave Russia the Donbas region and Crimea, while withdrawing from the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
It is not yet clear whether Ukraine or its allies would accept such a deal, as President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously rejected any terms that involve surrendering territory. The meeting is expected to take place amid uncertainty, with the possibility of Zelensky's involvement in the talks remaining open. Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
