The Lebanese government has approved the main objectives of a plan proposed by the United States, which aims to disarm Hezbollah by December 31, 2025, and gradually withdraw Israeli troops from Lebanese territory. This was announced by Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos after a cabinet meeting, stressing that the plan was not discussed in detail, but only in principle.
According to political sources, representatives of Hezbollah and its Shiite allies left the meeting in protest at this development.
The American plan, presented by Washington's envoy for the region, Tom Barrack, envisages four phases that include:
Immediate decrees for the disarmament of Hezbollah,
The extension of state control over all weapons,
The Israeli withdrawal from five positions in southern Lebanon,
Resolving the issue of prisoners and
The final determination of the borders with Israel and Syria.
The final phase of the plan includes dismantling Hezbollah's heavy weapons, including missiles and drones, as well as organizing an international economic conference by the US, Saudi Arabia, France, Qatar and other countries to support Lebanon's reconstruction and economic recovery.
The plan comes at a time of rising tension between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as concerns about the risk of a wider conflict in the region. So far, neither Israel nor Hezbollah have made any official comments on the US proposal.
