Tensions in the Persian Gulf escalated again on Friday after the US military announced it had struck two Iranian-flagged oil tankers that were sailing towards a port in Iran.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet used precision munitions to strike the smokestacks of two tankers, disabling them before they arrived at an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman.
In a statement published on the social network X, CENTCOM claimed that the ships were "breaking the ongoing US blockade."
On the other hand, the Iranian Fars News agency reported that since 1:00 PM, sporadic clashes have been recorded between American and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important strategic corridors for global oil transport, while relations between Washington and Tehran have entered a new phase of tension in recent weeks.
This event occurs at a time when the Donald Trump administration is still awaiting Iran's response to the American proposal for a ceasefire and the start of negotiations to end the conflict in the region.
