The Paris public prosecutor's office has launched a judicial investigation into the social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, over suspicions of algorithm manipulation and the use of fraudulent data.
This latest legal development puts investigating judges in charge of the case and comes after Musk failed to respond to a subpoena for questioning on April 20.
The prosecution has requested that X Corp, xAI, X.AI Holdings Corp, Elon Musk himself, and X's former CEO, Linda Yaccarino, be placed under formal investigation.
According to the official statement, everyone will be summoned to appear and, in case of failure to appear, judges may issue an arrest warrant, which would mean placing them under formal investigation.
The investigation has expanded in recent months and now includes suspicions of collaboration in the distribution of child pornography, as well as the creation of sexual deepfakes by the Grok system.
This issue has further increased tensions between the US and Europe regarding the control of Big Tech and the limits of freedom of expression.
In July, Musk dismissed the initial allegations, stating that French prosecutors were conducting a "politically motivated criminal investigation."
