The Israeli military announced the killing of Ahmed Galeb Balu, a senior figure and commander of Hezbollah's elite "Radwan" force.
The operation was carried out via an airstrike on Wednesday evening in the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area that is a strategic stronghold of the organization.
According to the official statement from the Israeli armed forces, which also released relevant visual material from the attack, Balut held key positions within the Radwan force hierarchy for a number of years.
In the past, he had served as the unit's chief of operations and is credited with leading dozens of attacks with anti-tank missiles and explosive devices against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
The IDF says Balut was tasked with the critical task of reorganizing and restoring the operational capabilities of the Radwan force. He is also credited with advancing Hezbollah's strategic plan for a possible ground invasion of Israeli territory, which Israel calls the "Galilee Invasion" plan.
It is noted that this operation marks the return of Israeli airstrikes in the Lebanese capital after a nearly month-long hiatus. The last recorded attack in Beirut occurred on April 8. The intervening period without attacks on the city is said to be attributed to a request made by US President Donald Trump to the Israeli leadership.
