The World Health Organization has confirmed that five confirmed cases of hantavirus have been identified in a new outbreak, while three other cases remain under suspicion.
WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus told the media that a total of eight cases have been reported, of which five have been confirmed and three are still under investigation.
According to him, the "Andean" strain of hantavirus that is causing this outbreak has a higher potential for transmission among family members, intimate partners, and healthcare providers.
Hantavirus includes a group of viruses transmitted by rodents, which can cause severe respiratory infections such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).
