The investigation into the embezzlement of around 700 thousand euros, intended for pensions and economic assistance for citizens in Durrës and Shijak, has revealed new details after the publication of footage from security cameras at the Durrës Post Office premises.
The videos administered by the investigative group show the former head of finance at the Durrës Post Office, Valbona Duni, who is currently under security custody as one of the people suspected of embezzling funds.
According to the footage, Duni is seen moving a black bag inside the office premises, where the money is suspected to be. At one point, she is seen in the office with documents in her hands, while communicating with former treasurer Paola Danaj. The bag of money is left on two chairs and then ends up on the floor, while the former finance chief leaves for a few moments and returns to pick it up again.
In front of investigators and the court, the three employees involved have given different versions of responsibility for the lack of funds. Former treasurer Paola Danaj has stated that the money was taken from Valbona Duni, while the latter has claimed that the embezzlement was carried out by the former director of the Durrës Post Office, Elisabeta Mataj.
On the other hand, Mataj has denied responsibility and has directed the accusations against her two subordinates, claiming that the lack of funds is related to their activities.
The court has imposed security measures for the three suspects, leaving former director Elisabeta Mataj in prison, while it has set milder security measures for the other two employees. Investigations to fully uncover the suspected embezzlement scheme continue.
