The United Nations Security Council has begun an emergency session to discuss the situation in Venezuela, amid strong diplomatic tensions following recent actions by the United States.
Former British national security adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant said the UK and other European countries were in a “very difficult position” at the meeting. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, he said the US actions were “almost illegal” under international law.
According to Grant, France and the United Kingdom will be "very careful" not to open a debate in the Security Council on the legality of the American operation, expecting their focus to be more on what happens next with Venezuela and the stability of the region.
The emergency session of the Security Council has been called with the agenda of "threats to international peace and security," and political clashes between major powers are expected to dominate the discussions.
