French President Emmanuel Macron said at a meeting of the Council of Ministers that France does not approve of the method used by the United States to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
In this way, he clarified his position regarding the US military operation in Caracas, said French government spokeswoman Maud Brejon, BFM television reports.
"We defend international law and the freedom of the people. The method used is neither supported nor approved," Macron said.
He stressed that France supports popular sovereignty, which was expressed in the 2024 elections in Venezuela.
Macron added that Paris will continue to "work with the countries of the region."
On January 3, the United States attacked the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and arrested the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife.
Maduro is currently in New York, where he is expected to appear in court today on drug and arms trafficking charges.
