Olive growers in the villages of Mallakastër have raised concerns about the lack of a market for olive oil, stating that large quantities of production have remained in stock. Although the area's olives are known for their centuries-old tradition and high oil quality, farmers say that difficulties in marketing are confronting them with serious economic problems.
According to them, this year's production has been abundant, which has increased the need to create collection points in the area. The growers are seeking state intervention to create an identifying brand that would help promote and export olives and olive oil produced in Mallakastër.
Farmers point out that the costs of cultivation and processing are extremely high, from maintaining the olive groves to processing in the factory. Due to the lack of a market, they say they are often forced to sell their production below cost, while warning that if the situation continues like this, many of them will give up olive cultivation due to constant losses.
