The Association of the Blind held a protest today, within the framework of International White Cane Day, raising its voice about the difficult conditions that this community has been facing for years.
According to representatives of the association, for more than a decade, blind people have suffered from a lack of support from state institutions, which has led to the exclusion of many of them from equal opportunities for education, employment, and an independent life.
"2009 is the last time that assistance for blind people was increased," the request letter to the government states.
The association calls on the executive to intervene urgently to:
Restoring public services dedicated to blind people;
Increasing economic assistance;
Enabling integration into the labor market, at least with minimum wage.
Protesters stressed that the lack of supportive policies is forcing many people to live in isolation, denying them dignity and the right to an equal life with the rest of society.
