An alarm has been raised in Britain after sperm from a donor with a gene linked to a high risk of cancer was used to conceive nearly 200 children through the in vitro process. Albania is also included in this distribution network, but the Ministry of Health in our country has not provided any information regarding this scandal.
In Albania, almost all private clinics perform in vitro procedures using donor sperm. However, the Ministry of Health does not exercise regular control over them and does not provide transparency on how these clinics operate, what standards they respect, and what security is offered to citizens.
According to the BBC, the European Sperm Bank in Denmark, which has distributed the biological material to several European countries, has expressed its "deepest condolences" to the affected families and acknowledged that the sperm has been used to give birth to many babies in several countries.
While the Ministry of Health collaborates with private hospitals in other areas, such as transplants, it continues to fail to provide guarantees and inform the public about the safety of in vitro procedures, leaving hundreds of citizens seeking treatment in private clinics in uncertainty.
