For a week, about 70 workers at the copper mine in Spaç, Mirdita, have stopped work and are continuing their protest due to dissatisfaction with working conditions and minimum wages. Today, the miners have escalated their reaction by blocking the entrance of the concession company "Tete Albania".
The workers say they are determined not to return to work until their demands are met, and they say negotiations with the company have failed, increasing tensions in the workplace. Among their main demands are the official recognition of the union formed in August and the signing of a collective agreement that, according to the protesters, would guarantee more security and rights at work.
The miners also accuse the company of refusing dialogue and taking punitive measures against the protest organizers, which has further increased dissatisfaction among their ranks.
Currently, activity at the mine is suspended. The parties are expected to return to talks only if the intervention is mediated by local or central authorities.
