A day after the reaction of residents living near the hazardous industrial waste disposal area, environmental specialists confirm that the concerns raised are justified. According to them, the containers where the waste is placed are exposed to atmospheric conditions and can be damaged, increasing the risk to the environment and public health.
Laboratory analyses conducted in Italy have confirmed that the industrial waste returned to Albania and deposited in Porto Romano is toxic and poses a serious risk, with a direct impact on both human health and the environment. Experts emphasize that this waste cannot be deposited or recycled in its current state, but requires specialized treatment before any form of final disposal, in accordance with international standards.
In this situation, specialists are calling for a rapid decision-making process for waste treatment, as well as the expansion of investigations to clarify the fate of the significant amounts of hazardous waste generated over the years by the Kurum company's activities, but also by other industrial activities in the country.
Meanwhile, despite the fact that the criminal investigation has uncovered a chain of violations and has led to the request for security measures for 33 people, over 2,800 tons of hazardous waste continue to remain in Porto Romano, without a clear decision on how and where to treat them. For the residents of the area and the public opinion, the issue has exceeded the limits of criminal justice, becoming a real threat to health, life and the ecosystem.
