The famous Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has been hospitalized in the “Dromokaiteio” psychiatric hospital for four days, following an order from the prosecutor. He was admitted to the clinic last Thursday afternoon, causing numerous reactions in public opinion and the Greek art world. According to the Greek media, there are suspicions that his hospitalization in the clinic was carried out with “tricks” by his sister and father, who have long had clashes with the singer over income and wealth issues. The artist’s sister was previously his career manager, but the relationship between them has been tense, which has led to constant conflicts.
After the news was published, a flood of reactions erupted on social networks and in the Greek media. Artists, public figures and numerous citizens have expressed their indignation, describing the case as unacceptable and shameful. They have called for the singer to be immediately released and returned home. According to them, even if there is a need for medical treatment, the way in which he was hospitalized is inappropriate and seriously damages the image of an artist of his caliber.
On the other hand, Mazonakis' family members have not yet reacted publicly to the allegations.
Meanwhile, the singer's lawyer has told Greek media that Mazonakis has not had any contact with his family for more than two years, as they are involved in a legal process over property issues. He said that the singer is healthy, but shocked by the way he was hospitalized.
"Jorgo is very well, although sad about the terrible way he was locked up in the clinic by family members, but he is completely healthy. He has not had any contact with his family for two years, as we are in court over the property. In September we had planned to file several complaints about serious abuse of his sister, and now this happened," the lawyer declared.
He emphasized that such a situation can happen to any person, since according to the law, anyone can appear at the prosecutor's office and request the hospitalization of a family member in a clinic, claiming that they are not mentally healthy, without first conducting a detailed examination.
"Keep in mind that he was taken on a holiday, when the institutions were closed. A month ago, his family members went to his house to talk, but he did not accept them and asked them to leave. Meanwhile, four months ago, a meeting took place with his sister in my presence, where an attempt was made to find a solution to the problems that are in court, but without result, and the court hearings will continue," the lawyer added.
