Residents of the village of Përbreg in Kukës have reacted strongly to the announcement of the construction of a landfill in their territory, expressing concern about the impact the project could have on the environment and livelihoods in the area. According to them, the decision was taken without public consultation and represents a direct risk to the lands, waters and air that they use for their daily lives.
Residents say they are determined not to allow the project to proceed and have warned they will use every legal means to stop it. The village headman, Hamit Dida, says the community is not against the development, but is demanding transparency and fair decision-making.
"This project was decided without our knowledge and approval. It is a decision that does not take into account the interests of the residents and endangers life in this area. We will do everything to stop it," said Dida.
On the other hand, the Municipality of Kukës remains steadfast on the implementation of the project.
Mayor Albert Halilaj, in a public statement, announced that the construction of the landfill in Përbreg is part of the National Reform for Integrated Waste Management for the period 2025–2030.
According to him, this is an initiative approved on December 28, 2020 by the municipalities of Kukës, Has and Tropojë, and by the Kukës Municipal Council.
His statement says that the landfill: “Will ensure safe and modern waste management, reduce soil and water pollution, improve the quality of life for residents and create a basis for recycling and green energy projects.” For Halilaj, this represents an important step towards a cleaner, more sustainable and more favorable future for the development of mountain tourism in Kukës.
Meanwhile, residents remain awaiting an official response to address their concrete concerns, while tension in the community increases, due to the lack of direct dialogue with decision-making institutions. /BalkanWeb/
