Tomorrow, the new school year 2025–2026 officially begins across the country, where around 345 thousand students will sit at school desks. Through a post on social networks, the Ministry of Education has announced that a total of 31 thousand teachers will be at the service of the learning process, while this year support for students with disabilities has been reinforced. Specifically, 2,260 assistant teachers have been engaged, an increase of 150 more than a year ago.
A special situation has been noted in Korça, where the new school year begins with a significant decrease in the number of students. Compared to the previous year, there are 3,726 fewer students, reducing the figure from 21,080 to 17,354. This decrease has led to the merger of several schools in the city of Korça, while dozens of first classes have not opened, as there has been no registration. According to the vice president of the teachers' union in Korça, the reduction by almost a quarter of students is an alarming indicator that requires emergency intervention in the education system. The decrease in the number of students is also directly reflected in teachers, many of whom remain without a full teaching load. Some of them are expected to be placed as assistant teachers or to engage in after-school programs.
