Socialist Party councilors submitted this Thursday to the Tirana Municipal Council secretariat the draft decision for the dismissal of the mayor, Erion Veliaj.
The document is accompanied by a legal report, which argues that Veliaj's prolonged absence from duty, of about three months due to an ongoing criminal process, constitutes a legal basis for the termination of his mandate.
The report emphasizes that the current situation in the capital requires active and present leadership, especially in a period of rapid economic and social development. However, it is clarified that the request for dismissal should not be interpreted as an admission of criminal charges against Veliaj.
If the draft decision is approved by the Municipal Council, the request will be forwarded to the Council of Ministers, which will make the final decision, according to legal procedures.
