Former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, was informed today by the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) of the closure of investigations into two important criminal files: the LSI lobbying case in the United States of America and the CEZ-DIA affair.
Meta appeared at SPAK around 11:00, accompanied from the detention facilities and assisted by his lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani. The hearing lasted about three hours, while the lawyer stated to the media that no new evidence was presented to support the charges of corruption, money laundering or concealment of assets.
"We were informed of the conclusion of the investigations, there was nothing new from what we have known since the first session. Even after 6 years of investigations into CEZ-DIA, there is no new fact. The same applies to the lobbying file in the US," Cakrani declared.
He stressed that the case will be pursued in court with ordinary process, rejecting summary judgment. The defense claims that the prosecution has not disclosed either the payments or their source, raising suspicions of a biased investigation.
In his reaction after the hearing, Ilir Meta welcomed the closure of the investigations, describing them as "fabricated investigations" that began in December 2019.
"I welcome the official closure of the fabricated investigation launched in December 2019. Nothing new from the last meeting on May 27 with SPAK prosecutors," Meta writes.
The former President has accused SPAK of deliberately avoiding investigations into two key issues, which, according to him, would have revealed the truth.
"We strongly and officially raised the request to responsibly investigate who made illegal payments on behalf of the LSI to companies in the US and secondly, to whom they sent the invoices for approval to the Freedom Party, the company GSIS," Meta further writes.
According to him, the failure to investigate these matters is the result of political interference:
"The failure to investigate these two issues is only a consequence of a political dictate, since from a legal and professional perspective this is the simplest thing that could be done and should have been done two years ago."
Ilir Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024 and formally indicted in May 2025. He is accused of passive corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets. The same procedure was followed for his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, her mother Fatime Kryemadhi, as well as two associates Ema Çoku and Piro Xhixho. SPAK has filed charges of corruption and money laundering against them.
